To upload your Web site using MS Publisher 2003, please follow the steps below.
First, you should note that the Microsoft Publisher's default settings were meant
for uploading your site to Microsoft-based servers with FrontPage extensions installed.
Since our servers are either Unix or Linux-based, the following will guide
you through the steps to upload your site made with Publisher using the
more generic FTP function which all Unix and Linux servers support.
- First, make sure your home page is named "index.html". Open your Web site in Microsoft Pubisher
- From the File menu, select Web Site Properties.
- In the Web Site Properties window, make sure your Home page file name is "index" and the File name extension is "html".
- Click OK.
- Then, we will need to save the Web site to a folder on your hard drive
- From the File menu, select Publish Web Site to Folder
– this will save your entire Web site on your computer in a folder of your choice and also in a format called HTML used for Web sites.
- Select a folder name or create a new folder into which you will save the Web site
– make sure you remember the name!
- Click OK to begin saving your Web site to that folder
- So, once your have your Web site saved, you are almost ready to upload it to the server.
Now, please review the following suggested settings on how to
configure your Publisher before actually starting the upload.
Please double check the following suggested settings:
- Go to Options in the Tools menu and click on the Web tab
- Uncheck Rely on VML
- Uncheck Allow PNG
- Uncheck all boxes under Encoding and E-mail
- Check the Organize ... box
- Check the Enable ... option
- Click OK
Now, let's start uploading!
- Go to Publish to the Web... in the File menu
- If you see a dialog box stating that you need a Web host, ignore it and click OK
- Click the drop down list arrow in the Save in: box
- At the very bottom of the list you'll see Add / Modify FTP locations
– you can skip this part the next time you upload
In the dialog box that opens up add the following information (case sensative):
- Name of FTP site is your domain name without the leading www's, or if you have only registered your domain within the last 24 hours, then use the failsafe hostname that was provided in your confirmation letter when you signed up with us.
Usually the failsafe hostname will look something like upload6.wyith.net
- Log in as: check User and enter your username (case sensitive) which was also provided in your confirmation letter
- In the Password box type in your password (case sensitive)
- Click the Add button which will add your new setting to the FTP Sites: list box at bottom
- Click OK and you will return to the Publish dialog box
- Now double click on your FTP site name you just created and then click Open button
- Make sure in the file name box at bottom, the name is index.html or index.htm and the Save as type: should be "Web Page, Filtered" (which should be the default settings)
- Publisher will now connect to the Web server and show a list of files on the server. Do not change any file or folder that you're not familiar with and didn't create yourself (or bad things will probably happen)
- Click the Save button. Publisher begins generating html Web page files and images and uploads them to the server
Congratulations, it's all done. Your site should be live immediately once the uploading is done but if your have only recently registered your domain name, you may not be able to see your Web site immediately.
